Short Bio

Rubén Rivera starts to learn drawing, painting and printmaking at an early age from his father, Rubén Rivera Aponte, who is a painter and printmaker.

Rubén Rivera begins to participate in collective art exhibitions in 1977. In 1981, the pencil drawing “Germination, Repression” wins first mention at the “Certamen de Artes Plásticas” sponsored by Revista Sin Nombre. During the 1980’s he continues his work mostly through paintings and pencil drawings, and he quickly develops his interest as an artist extending into portraiture, the human figure and landscapes, as well as abstract drawing and painting. During this decade he also experiments with video art and begins his interest in 2D animation.

In 1990 Rubén Rivera opens “Fuga Cinética, Inc.”, a non-digital, traditionally equipped animation studio, making many experimental animated shorts as an independent animator. Among these, “Boxhead”, “Detritus” and “Crash” were presented in many animation festivals. In 1996, Rubén wins the “Premio Al Merito” given by the “Fondo Nacional Para el Financiamiento de Quehacer Cultural, Instituto de Cultura Puertorriqueña” for his achievements as an independent animator.

Since 2005, after working some years in many forms of digital graphic, web design and animation, Rubén starts to focus again on painting and drawing. In 2006 his drawing “Larvas II” wins a Honorific Mention at the “Primera Bienal del Dibujo de Las Américas Rafael Cauduro” at the Palacio de la Cultura, Tijuana, Mexico.
